The Stuffing Around Principle

If you are planning a surgery refit you might be interested in factors that keep costs down. I’d like to tell you about something we have discovered which may be counter intuitive. One would think that taking existing furniture or office equipment to the new refit will save money. That makes sense. Or does it?

During the time we’ve been doing surgeries we have discovered a hidden cost you probably should be aware of. Incorporating existing items into a new refit can actually end up costing you extra. Why? Well we call it “The Stuffing Around Principle”.

It actually takes extra time and energy to ensure existing furniture fits. It has to fit physically into the new space and it has to belong in the overall aesthetic. This means your designer ends up having to focus a considerable amount of time trying to ensure that the old piece of furniture doesn’t look out of place. Do you really want that old bookshelf or desk to be dictating the tone of your refit? This is not the best use of your design dollar. If you want a fresh modern feel it may be best to lose the old gear.

Old furniture doesn’t just create extra work for your designer. The shop fitter, builder or cabinet maker also has to ensure that his cabinet making is going fit into the space with the older furniture. For your designer and for your shop fitter – an empty space is the most economical and efficient starting point for a new refit. It delivers the best opportunity for a fresh and consistent feel.

There is nothing like the craftsmanship in some old furniture. Over the years we’ve collected some old pieces that really appeal to us. If there is a piece that is worthy of featuring in your new design you can trust your designer to tell you. So when you are ready, call the office equipment auction house and let them know you have some business for them. Be assured what you are doing makes good business sense.
